Maternity and Paternity Leave in Spain

In Spain, the systems for marriage and parental leave provide couples with the time and resources to enjoy significant moments in their lives. According to Spanish labor laws, both partners are entitled to these leaves.

Marriage Leave

In Spain, employees are entitled to 15 days of paid marriage leave to celebrate their union. This leave applies to all couples who have officially registered their marriage, regardless of whether they are heterosexual or homosexual, starting from the day of the marriage.

Parental Leave

The parental leave policy in Spain offers new parents 16 weeks of paid leave, which both the mother and the father can benefit from. The first 6 weeks must be taken immediately after childbirth, while the remaining 10 weeks can be used flexibly within the first year after the child’s birth. Additionally, the leave is extended for multiple births.

The purpose of these leaves is to ensure that newlyweds and new parents have sufficient time to adjust to new changes in their lives while also securing their financial stability. Spain’s leave policies reflect the importance of work-life balance and the support and encouragement for family life.
